Tips to build your fan base from Jason Mraz

Watch an inspirational video from Jason Mraz about how he developed his fan base and career. Were proud of the fact that Jason Mraz and his music, before any big label recordings, was one of the first artists on the original RadioIndy, which was an MP3.com station some years ago. It's great to see how far he has come.

Pandora making progress, but is it indie friendly?

We are happy to see Pandora.com making progress on becoming a successful Internet music site. The company posted its first profit at the end of last year, had $50 million in revenue, and is about to reach 60 million registered listeners. The deal regarding an online music royalty dispute that it negotiated last year, may mean that at some point in the not-to-distant future, instead of paying per song royalties, the site pays 25% of its revenue to atrists. A new business model, that might be critical for online music site survival. However, we have an important question: Does Pandora do anything to help indie artists?
We are interested in learning if you've had any luck getting your music onto Pandora.com and/or getting traffic to your music through the site. We've not had success thus far, trying to work with Pandora to feature our indie artists. That's one reason we launched our own big-name music site, where we feature indie music as well: JustClickRadio.com. Have you had any luck getting new fans from Pandora.com?  Let us and other artists know by responding to this blog post.

Future Online Promotion? - Friends follow friends' credit card purchases

Web sites are being developed by serious and successful entrepreneurs that will allow you and your fans to share all your credit card purchases automatically with each other, and to discuss on a social media platform. The sites include www.blippy.com and www.swipely.com. This may help drive new fan prospects to your music. In the future, when your fans use credit cards to purchase your music, their friends will automatically see this transaction via one of these web sites and a discussion will be automatically started. Hopefully, this will drive more interest in you and your music.

Prince Fights to keep his music off the Internet

Prince reiterated this week that he continues to resist making his music available on the Internet. Music news services ran stories this week that highlighted Prince's dislike of the Internet. He appears to be convinced that Internet music is just a music fad, like MTV. RadioIndy thinks that Prince is still living in the Purple Rain '80s. Internet-based music delivery, whether to your computer or to any other Internet connected device, is a fundamental improvement in delivering music that will be here for many years to come.

Music download sites compared

Want to compare the features of the top music download sites? Toptenreviews.com has an informative side-by-side comparison at http://music-download-review.toptenreviews.com/index.html. Plus, they've written detailed reviews of all of the top ten music download sites.
Number one on their list? You guessed it - itunes.com, followed by Napster, AmazonMP3, and Rhapsody. With recent changes, iTunes tracks are now free of annoying play restrictions. Plus, if you're not an iPod owner, you can now convert any track from iTunes to a standard MP3 format. The big advantage of iTunes over some of the other best rated sites, like Rhapsody.com, however, seems to be unrelated to music. iTunes now has movies, audiobooks, and TV shows for purchase. However we've never been a fan of having to download the large and difficult to control iTunes music store.
We checked out the top 10 download sites for the breadth of their indie catalog. The bottom line is that most of the top ten download sites have many indie tracks. PureTracks/audiolunchbox, which have merged recently, seem to have the least indie tracks in our analysis. Napster and Zune also had less indie tracks in our survey of select RadioIndy bands, than Rhapsody or iTunes, for example. What do you think the most indie-friendly and indie-inclusive music download site is?
